Coach Hector brings a rare combination of competitive achievement, academic depth, and genuine passion for teaching to every session. Originally from Mexico and now based in the Bay Area, he holds a Master’s degree and a background spanning law, education, and chess — giving him a uniquely analytical and patient approach to instruction.

Hector began his chess journey in middle school and grew through dedicated practice, study, and tournament play into a nationally recognized competitor — earning 1st place at a national-level high school championship in Mexico. With 15+ years of playing experience and 3+ years of coaching in after-school programs, private lessons, and online settings, he works confidently with students of all levels, from first-time players to experienced competitors, ages 5 and up.

His coaching philosophy is patient, practical, and personalized. He focuses on building not just chess skills, but confidence, focus, and strong thinking habits that carry beyond the board. What drives him most is watching students grow — gaining the ability to break down hard problems and trust their own decisions, move by move.

Favorite chess book: Garry Kasparov’s How Life Imitates Chess — because great chess, like life, is about strategy, preparation, and the choices we make.
